Minneapolis Overview

Minneapolis is nick named the “City of Lakes” and the “Mill City”. Minneapolis sits on the banks of the Mississippi River and the Minnesota River. Minneapolis is also known as part of the “Twin Cities” with St. Paul, Minnesota, the states capital. The Minneapolis-St.Paul area is home to approximately 3.5 million people. The Minneapolis economy today is made up of commerce, finance, rail and trucking services, health care, and industry. There are six Fortune 500 corporations with headquarters in Minneapolis: Target Corporation, U.S. Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Pepsi Americas. These companies are also major employers in the greater Minneapolis area. Minneapolis was ranked the “Top Tech City” in America by Popular Science in 2005 and in 2006 was named a city among the “Smart Places to Live” by a Kiplinger poll. Minneapolis is surprisingly second only to New York City in live theater per capita, and is the third largest market for theater in America, following New York City and Chicago. Professional sports are also a Minneapolis staple, home to the NFL Minnesota Vikings, and the MLB Minnesota Twins.
