Memphis is located at the southwestern tip of Tennessee near the Wolf and Mississippi Rivers with a population of about 1.3 million “Memphians,” as they refer to themselves. Memphis is the biggest city in the state of Tennessee and the twentieth largest in America. Memphis is located near more than four major natural aquifers, one called the Memphis Sand Aquifer, estimated to contain in excess of 100 trillion gallons of artesian water. One major attraction to Memphis is the huge Memphis in May celebration. It is a month-long series celebrating Memphis heritage and outreach. Other major city events are the Beale Street Music Festival, International Week, Sunset Symphony, and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest – the largest pork barbecue-cooking contest in the world. Memphis’ ideal location has made it a popular hub for the shipping and transport industry; river barges are a common sight and the Memphis International Airport is the world’s busiest cargo airport, serving as the main FedEx Express hub. Fortune 500 companies located in Memphis are the FedEx Corporation, AutoZone Incorporated, and International Paper.
