Oklahoma City Overview

As the state capital and the largest city in the state of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, has a population of 1,322,249 residents. The city is also ranked 31st among the most populated cities in the United States and 8th largest in the nation by land area. The city was founded in 1889 and managed to expand its population by 10,000 in only a matter of hours. Oklahoma City’s attraction at the time was its oil, natural gas, and petroleum markets; today the city has shifted gears and is one of the top livestock markets of the world. Oklahoma city is located en route to Mexico and is only several hours away from the Dallas metropolitan area. Its prime location has also made it a focal point for some of the nations strongest tornadoes recording over 9 touching down in the Oklahoma City area. Oklahoma city was once a government power center but today has branched out to information technology and health sectors of business. The city is home to some Fortune 500 companies such as Devon Energy and Chesapeake Energy. Also, headquartered here are Sonic Drive- In, AT&T and Williams- Sonoma. When visiting the states capital tourists will find that neighborhoods are divided into districts offering culture and history and as of 2003 a district honoring film exchange.
