Las Vegas, Sin City, The Strip. Call it what you will. A holiday destination for people the world over. With its bars, casinos, hotels and restaurants it’s bound to attract holiday makers. Not to mention the wedding chapels making it the number one marriage destination in the United States. A city like that would have many strange stories to tell as would many of its residents. Below is a compiled list of strange and weird facts about Las Vegas that you might not know about.

  • The name Las Vegas means the meadows in Spanish
  • Las Vegas started off as a small parcel of land. 110 acres when it was founded in 1905. Las Vegas didn’t become an incorporated township until 1911. As you could imagine it has undergone significant changes since then to become the gambling capital of the world .
  • A guy by the name of Fred Smith managed to take $5000 and turn it into $32,000 to save his failing company. What was his company you ask? FedEx
  • There is a company in Las Vegas called Hangover Heaven, who for a fee will come to your hotel room and treat your hangover with vitamins, fluids, and medications via an IV.
  • Underneath it all, there are about 1000 homeless people living in the massive sewer tunnel system underneath Las Vegas.
  • There is a Las Vegas restaurant known as the Heart Attack Grill, who have an offer that if you weigh over 350 pounds, you can eat for free.
  • Janet Airline is a small airline that operates out of the Las Vegas airport, whose sole purpose is to transport government employees back and forth to Area 51.
  • In Las Vegas, it is illegal to pawn your dentures. Just in case you were wondering.
  • Gambling is illegal just outside Las Vegas, like in Boulder the next town over.
  • It is estimated that up to 500 couples a day get married in here. Making it the number one wedding destination in the United States and number 2 in the world. All you need to get married is a driver’s license and $55 for the marriage license.
  • More than 41 million people from all over the world visit Las Vegas each year.

 

  • Annual rainfall in Las Vegas is less than 4 inches, I mean it is a desert after all.
  • There are two places called Las Vegas in the united states. The popular one in Nevada and the other one in New Mexico. They are about 700 miles apart. One is probably a lot more exciting than the other one.
  • Elvis Presley has once performed 837 consecutive sold out shows in the Las Vegas Hilton casino. Maybe that’s why they called him the king.
  • There is a Black Book of Las Vegas. An official list of people who are blacklisted from entering and gambling in Las Vegas casinos. It was first started in 1960 to keep organised crime mobs away from the casinos. It is also referred to as the Griffin Book.
